Interesting if you have ambitions in the film-making direction, but otherwise I'd say it's too much editor for fun videos. You wouldn't have any problem using it (all video editors are very similar), but it isn't as fast and flexible in its operation as Movie Studio. But, it is a professional product and although it's very powerful indeed, it is maybe not the thing for putting together some videos and having fun. And even the full price version is only $300 (the hardware ecosystem they're selling the pros into is expensive). And it's not some cut down version of a full product or some microtransaction thing out to nickel and dime you - it's a fully-fledged professional product that only differs from its full-price brother by the omission of a couple of features only high-end professional users would want. There's been a bit of movement in the video editing market in the last couple of years which has changed things up.ĭaVinci Resolve is free. It's slightly tricky recommending something at the moment. It was a little deceptive (though entirely understandable) for them to mostly keep the name, whilst changing the product. If you find you don't get on with what passes for Movie Studio now, it might be worth getting in touch with Magix to see if there's anything you can do. ![]() Since the end of 2021, it has been a different product using the same name (but with 'Vegas' dropped from the title). Movie Studio was Vegas right up until version 17. Magix also disposed of some of their other video editors. In fact, it's really Magix Movie Edit Pro renamed and support for Vegas Movie Studio files added. What is sold as Movie Studio now, no longer has the word Vegas on it. In effect, they killed it off completely. Rather quietly, at the end of last year, Magix rejigged Movie Studio. Vegas Movie Studio 17 was the last one to be based on Vegas. Although they continued to develop Movie Studio as a cut-down Vegas, eventually they called time. Having Vegas as their top-line product was fine, but Movie Studio was competing with much of their existing software. They already had a few different video editors on the go: Fastcut, Video Pro X, Video Easy and Movie Edit Pro. Magix have continued to develop Vegas and Movie Studio ever since.īut there was a problem for Magix. Once it got to version 13, Sony sold the whole lot (and a bunch of other software too) to Magix. Sony continued to develop Movie Studio and Vegas together. In addition to Vegas, there was Vegas Movie Studio, which was the same product, but with a few less features. After a couple of versions it started handling video. Originally, Sonic Foundry made Vegas and, to most people's surprise, it was purely an audio editor. I got something called Magix Movie Studio 2022, with wildly different layout and features than I expect from a Sony Vegas product. I had been getting a prompt to upgrade again for $69 and change, so I finally did, only to get a wildly different program than I thought I was purchasing. Eventually I had the option to pay a small amount ($60 iirc) and upgrade to the latest Sony Vegas Movie Studio 14 which I’ve had till yesterday.
